Is God Enough?

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Then Abram said, “Look, you have given me no offspring; indeed, one born in my house is my heir!” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.” Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” Genesis 15:1-5 KJV

This morning I woke up to voice of God asking me the simple question, “Am I enough?”  First, it was 4 am.  This is usually when God speaks to me because He knows trying to talk to me when I am awake can be challenging at times.  With so many thoughts and ideas going on in my head, I usually miss His still voice.  When He needs me to understand, He will wake me up and direct me right to verses He needs me to focus upon.

This morning was no different.  I had received a text message from someone who needed to hear the answer provided in Genesis 15.  Just like God always does, He provided an answer for the person who needed to hear it as well as myself.  We are no different than Abraham.

You see Abram (before his name change) longed for an heir.  A child.  Someone to carry on his name after he was long gone from this earth.  That is what our children do.  I can understand the longing being that I am a woman who has never carried a child.  I used to be very sad about not having children.  Once I got to be in my late 40’s I totally understood that God had something different for my life.  Something that involved me relying on Him totally.  He would have to be enough.  God must be enough for us when we do not get the things, we think we should have in our lives.  Maybe it is a husband or wife.  A love.  A child.  None of these things will fill us the way that God does.

God and Abram had the same discussion we have all had.  Here is Abram telling God, but I do not have an heir.  God telling him before he even asked, “I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”  God is telling Abram, “I am the best thing that ever happened to you!”  “You have the God of the Universe walking and talking with you and you are focused on an heir?”  Sounds silly when it is put in prospective.  We have a God who wants to have a personal, intimate deep relationship with us, and we are focused on what we do not have!

Look how loving God is!  He did not scold Abram for these thoughts.  He just reminded Abram of His promise.  God made a promise to Abram that His offspring would number the stars in the sky.  That is some kind of promise God made to Abram!  Yes, we are all part of Abram’s offspring.  Ever believer in Jesus Christ is a son and daughter of Abram or Father Abraham.

Finally, God makes his point by counting Abram’s faith in God as righteousness.  Abram was placed in a right relationship with God because of His faith in God.  Abram did not have faith in faith.  Abram knew and understood God is enough.  God is a promise keeper, and I can rely on Him to keep His promises.

So, you wonder what does this mean for us as believers today?  We must rely upon God for everything.  He must be enough for us today, tomorrow and every day we have.  Every day God must be enough to fill us, keep us, and hold us.  God the Father is enough, Jesus Christ is enough, and The Holy Spirit is enough.  God is enough!
