I can remember the first time I heard Gary Chapman talk about the 5 languages of Love. Words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. My husband and I recently took the tests to find out what our love languages were. I wasn’t at all supprised by mine but I was definitely surprised by his. Showing someone love in a way they can understand and accept should be a basic science we all learn. As we took these personal tests, I thought back to what is God’s love language? How can I as a believer in Christ show The Creator of Heaven and Earth how much I love Him.
Words of Affirmation: I believe God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) loves our praise and worship. The following verses talk about worshipping God.
Exodus 34:14 – “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”
Psalm 99:5 – “Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.”
Matthew 4:10 – “Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”
Revelation 4:11 – “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
1 Chronicles 16:29 – “Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”
Psalm 29:2 – “Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”
Hebrews 12:28 – “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.”
Psalm 100:2 – “Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.”(KJV)
God calls us to worship HIM alone. He is worthy of our praise, worship, and adoration. Everything we can give, say, think, and feel, should be directed to our Maker. My favorite is Psalm 45:11 So the King will greatly desire your beauty; Because He is your Lord, worship Him.” These verses challenge me to worship God every day.
Acts of Service: God chooses to serve Himself and others. He serves himself by God, the Son submitting to the Father’s will by coming and dying on the cross. This act of selfless service is throughout the entire bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament. The Old Testament constantly points the reader to the coming of the Messiah; while the new is the fulfillment of that coming. These verses are about acts of service toward God.
Serving God
- Joshua 24:15 – “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
- Deuteronomy 10:12 – “And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul.”
- Colossians 3:23-24 – “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
- Romans 12:11 – “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.”
- 1 Samuel 12:24 – “Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.” (KJV)
As believers in Christ, we are called to mimic what our God does? By service to others not only are we copying our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ by serving Him, we also show love to others by serving our fellow men and women. Our love for Christ can be summed up by what we do for others. Here are several verses that confirm this thinking:
Serving Others
- Galatians 5:13 – “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”
- Mark 10:45 – “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
- Matthew 23:11 – “But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.”( KJV)
Service to God and others is an integral part of our faith.
Receiving Gifts: God’s greatest gift to humankind is salvation through His Son Jesus Christ. His being born of a virgin, living and dying for us and us alone shows us how God loves to give gifts. He spares no expense when showering His creation with gifts. Here are verses that show us God loves to give gifts.
James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
Matthew 7:11 – “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
Ephesians 2:8 – “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”
Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
1 Corinthians 12:4 – “Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.” (KJV)
Our talents are gifts from God. Whether it is singing, dancing, drawing or being a good friend, these are all gifts given from God to us. Here are verses on how our gifts given to us by God should be used for each other.
Proverbs 18:16 – “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.”
Proverbs 19:6 – “Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.”
Luke 6:38 – “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
2 Corinthians 9:7 – “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”
Ecclesiastes 5:19 – “Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.” (KJ)
You’re probably realizing these love languages come directly from God. Yes, how we receive and give love is a gift from God for us to share with humankind. Now I only used 3 of the 5 gifts so that you can understand that all of the love languages first have to come to you through our relationship with God, through His Son Jesus Christ. Our gifts are activated to their highest potential when we love God with all of our heart, mind, and soul. Then we can love others with the same love that God has shown us by sending his only Son.
