What does the Bible say about the Trinity?

by Mother Leticia Tadalan

2 Corinthians 13:14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. (NIV)

The Trinity is one of the great theological mysteries. There are some who think that because we believe in monotheism, the belief in One God, we cannot accept the concept of the Triune Godhead. Yet the bible teahes that the Godhead consists of three Divine Persons: God, The Father, God, The Son, and God, The Holy Spirit. Each fully God, and each showing full divine nature (Luke 3:21-22)

21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son;[a] with you I am well pleased.” (ESV)

Matthew 3:16-17

16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him,[a] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son,[b] with whom I am well pleased.” (ESV)

John 1:32-34

32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son[a] of God.” (ESV)

The Father is the fountainhead of the Trinity, the Creator, The First Cause. He is the primary thought, the concept of all that has been and will be created. Jesus said, “My Father had been working until now, and I have been working.” (John 5:17)

The Son is the “Logos” or expression of God. The Only begotten of the Father and He Himself is God. Further, as God incarnate. He reveals the Father to us. John 14:9, Jesus states to apostle Phillip, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father”? The Son of God is both the agent of creation and mankind’s only Redeemer.

The Holy Spirit (or the Holy Ghost) the Third Person of the Trinity, proceeds from the Father and is worshipped and glorified together with the FAther and the Son. He inspired the Scriptures, empowers God’s people and convicts the world of sin and of righteousness and judgement. John 16:8, Jesus teaches us the duty of the Holy Spirit, “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment”

All Three Persons of the Godhead are eternal. The Father exist and has existed forever. With Him always existed His expression The Son. Always the Father loved the Son, and the Son loved and served the Father. From that realtionship of love exists the Holy Spirit of God, who is eternal and has existed forever. The Father didn’t exist first, then later the Son and later the Spirit. They all three have existed from before there was anything that could be. Three distinct Persons all functions as one. Upon occassion of Jesus’ baptist all three Persons in the Godhead were present and active. The Father spoke from heaven, the Son was fulfilling all righteousness and The Spirit descended upon the Son like a dove. (Matthew 3:16-17)

The existence of the Trinity is a mystery that one day we will understand clearly. For now, we know that the Bible teaches it ad Jesus revealed it ad the Christian Church from the beginning has confessed and safeguarded this precious truth.

We can read it in the following scriptures in the bible:

Luke 3:21-22
1 Corithians 12:4-6
2 Corinthians 13:14
Ephesians 4:4-6
2 Thessalonians 2:13-14
John 5:17
John 14:7-11
John 16:8

  1. You are quoting scriptures and have no understanding what they mean, and even using non-biblical language. No where does the Bible say that the Godhead consists of three Divine persons. We should not add, alter, or subtract from the scriptures. This is what Satan does to the word or God. Whenever that is done, it becomes a doctrine of devils. The Bible is sufficient, and perfectly interprets itself. God has declared His counsel from the very beginning and left nothing to human conjecture. That is not a risk that God could take. Everything that God does is written, but because His word is spirit, it must be spiritually discerned. I can use the very word to explain everyone of those scriptures and every misinterpreted text used by trinitarians. They are just blind and need to have their eyes opened. Jesus had to do this for his disciples to enable them to see – Luke 24:45. God is not a trinity. He is One Lord.

    1. Mr. Smith, Thank you for your response. God is triune. The word “trinity” does not show up anywhere in scripture and should be avoided at all costs. The better word is Triune. “Tri” meaning “3” and “une” meaning united which would be in agreement with the Hebrew that is found in Deuteronomy 6:5. “Hear O Israel, the Lord Your God is One.” The word in Hebrew E’chad which means plural unified not singularly quantity. In laymen’s terms this means that the world found in Deuteronomy means in English “unified” There is one God but 3 persons which make up the triune Godhead. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. If this definition is incorrect then how is Jesus in God’s presence? He sits at the right hand of God in glorified form. Meaning he is flesh and bone. See the resurrection story about the resurrected body. Can you explain How Jesus was able to see Satan fall like a lighting bolt to earth? See Luke 10:18. How was Jesus able to be in the presence of God without being destroyed? God the Father says he dwells with one who is contrite and lowly in spirit. See Isaiah 57:15. I don’t use human conjecture to discuss matters of the Spirit of God. I study the word of God with no presumption or knowledge because no man(woman) can know the mind of God. Finally why did Jesus himself teach us to baptize people in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This would be considered blasphemy by the Jews. Why wasn’t he stoned for blasphemy if this were not so? Please hear out those who are much more learned than me on the subject of Hebrew and the “Shema”. https://youtu.be/jd5GYMXWfQo

      1. Hello Monique. I had typed in a previous reply but I am not sure it got posted. In my estimate, I do not believe that ninety percent of “believing” Christians truly know who Jesus is, even though many are indwelled by Him and many are being used by Him. They will not have this revelation until on that day, when the they are translated, then they will have realized that they have failed to “believe all.” “Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:-Luke 24:25 KJV.

We are not here to figure out who God is. We are instructed to believe. We will never understand that God is One is in our natural thinking. It is foolishness unto us. It is foolishness unto us because the Word must be spiritually discerned (Read 1 Corinthians 2). So what do we do? We apply human logic. When we do this, God simply hides Himself. God is masterful at hiding His truth in plain sight. Nothing amazes me more than for me to see how much of the word men cannot see. Unless the Lord opens our eyes, we will never see the truth. “Surely you are a God who keeps yourself hidden, God of Israel, the savior” – Isaiah 45:15 LEB. The Word is God so God hides His truth.

If there is anyone that can tell us who God Is, it is Jesus. As a matter of fact, that was part of His mission for earth that He did finish his work (John 17:4). No one will make Jesus a liar. What Jesus told us about God is found in John 4:24. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” – KJV. This word needs to be meditated on. It is most important. It is the foundation in terms of the teaching of Jesus. You quoted Isaiah 57:15, well that verse is understood in John 4:24. We must first understand the nature of God and where He dwells. The reason why we cannot understand this mystery is because we are trying to understand it from our human perspective and not from a heavenly perspective.

God is One. He is not three persons in one God. This is the compromise that we make but it is not accurate. God is a Spirit. Say it 100 times and let it sink in. Let us not add to the Word or subtract from it. The Lord has explained everything relative to His person and work between John chapters 14 and 16. For this reason He was able to conclude in John 17:3 “And this is life eternal, that they might KNOW THEE only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” This was part of His mission to earth. Yet the earth is still in darkness about who Jesus is because we are careful enough to observe. We let blind fools like those from the Nicene Council tell us who God is. We have left off from building on the foundation. We have adopted a Greek culture in the which we believe that we can use linguistics to interpret God’s Word that is spirit.
If you have an open mind, I can show you the path through the scriptures that lead up to John 17:3.

        Shalom
        Apostle Leroy Smith
